Karen VanderMeer concentrates her practice in family and matrimonial law and has more than a decade of experience representing individuals in domestic relations matters. She advises clients on issues involving divorce, allocation of parental responsibilities, parenting time, child support, spousal maintenance and both premarital and postnuptial agreements. Karen also handles post decree enforcement and modification matters, guiding clients through complex family law issues during periods of personal transition. She advises clients in both negotiated resolutions and litigation, developing case strategies tailored to the circumstances of each matter. Karen’s practice includes substantial experience handling contested and uncontested family law matters. She routinely develops case strategy, manages discovery in financially intricate cases, drafts settlement agreements and represents clients in contested hearings and trial proceedings. Early in her training, Karen was a 711 law clerk and represented children in domestic relations matters through the Office of the Public Guardian in Cook County, an experience that continues to inform her approach to cases involving parenting issues. Education Karen graduated from Boston College Law School in 2012 and received her Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Brandeis University in 2007. While in law school, Karen was the Children’s Rights Group co-president and the Law Student Association’s Community Service co-chair. She volunteered with victims of domestic violence, offering legal assistance and other services. Employment Prior to joining Kogut & Wilson, Karen worked in a variety of family law focused roles that broadened her understanding of the field. She previously practiced family law in Chicago, representing clients in all phases of domestic relations matters, including dissolution of marriage, parenting disputes and allocation, financial support issues and post-decree proceedings. While in law school, she represented children in domestic relations matters through the Cook County Office of the Public Guardian as a 711 certified law clerk and served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Veronica Mathein in the Domestic Relations Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County where she assisted in pro se case. Karen also coordinated with intended parents in establishing legal parentage in gestational surrogacy cases by preparing adoption pleadings and various orders and negotiating egg donor and gestational surrogacy agreements as a law clerk with Circle Surrogacy.
