Genesis Hernandez concentrates her practice in all areas of family and matrimonial law.

She first served at Kogut & Wilson as a law clerk, corresponding with attorneys and clients to discuss strategies that meet each client’s best interests. In her multiple capacities, Genesis has gained considerable knowledge of the firm’s clients and the inner workings of the family law field. With experience in Guardian ad Litem and adoption cases, Orders of Protection and many aspects of family law, Genesis is readily equipped to provide solutions to complex and sensitive family law matters.

As a fluent Spanish speaker, she guides Spanish-speaking clients through their pressing issues.

Education

Genesis graduated with her J.D. from DePaul University College of Law with a certificate in Family Law in 2021. While in law school, she received the Schiller, DuCanto and Fleck Family Law Fellowship. This fellowship is only awarded to 10 students who have an interest in family law and a record of outstanding academic achievement and leadership. Genesis also served as an Executive Board Member of the Latino Law Student Association.

She earned her Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in Political Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2018.

Employment

Prior to joining Kogut & Wilson, Genesis served as a law clerk with multiple Chicago-based law firms. As a law clerk, she prepared pleadings and reports in Guardian ad Litem and adoption cases, drafted motions and agreements in complex financial cases and aided in family law processes. In these roles, Genesis assisted Spanish-speaking clients correspond effectively with their attorneys.

She also worked as an intern with Civic Legal Corps and as a family law intern for the Legal Aid Society where she assisted drafting and filing Orders of Protection and additional family law legal documents.

Professional Associations

Genesis serves as a member of the Chicago Bar Association to advance her practice and knowledge in the family law field. She is also a member of the Child and Family Law Association as well as the Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois of which she is an elected member of the Young Lawyers Board.

In 2023, she joined the Force of Lawyers Against Sexual Harassment’s (FLASH) Board of Managers, in which she assists the marketing subcommittee with raising awareness about the task force and actively running FLASH’s social media.

Community Involvement

Genesis volunteered with You’ve Got Mail which promotes literacy in the Chicago Public School system by exchanging letters with elementary students. She has also volunteered at the Chicago Marathon, Shamrock Shuffle and beach clean ups near Chicago.

Awards

Genesis has been named to the Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch list in the area of Family Law since 2024, signifying her status as an up-and-coming attorney.
